Cents-per-km claim (capped at 5,000 km)≈ $4,400

Best fit for you: you're doing well over 5,000 work km, so cents-per-km caps out early. A 12-week logbook will almost certainly get you a bigger claim — worth the effort.

The logbook method

Keep a diary of every trip for 12 weeks — that sets your work-use percentage, and it holds for up to five years. You then claim that percentage of all car costs: fuel, rego, insurance, servicing, depreciation. More paperwork up front, usually a much bigger claim for a genuine work ute.

The cents-per-km method

No logbook needed — just a reasonable basis for your work kilometres. You claim a set rate (around 88c/km) for up to 5,000 work km a year, and that's it: no fuel receipts, no separate depreciation. Simple, but capped at roughly $4,400 a year no matter how much you actually spend.
