Understanding Instant Asset Write-Off for Tradies
1 August 2026 · 5 min read · By Heaney Accounting
If you are running a trade business, buying new gear like a ute, a commercial trailer, or heavy power tools is a significant investment. The instant asset write-off is a tax incentive that allows you to claim the full cost of these items in the year you buy them, rather than claiming small amounts over several years.
Eligibility for the Write-Off
Not every purchase qualifies for an immediate deduction. To be eligible, the item must be used for business purposes to generate income, and it must fall within the current asset threshold limits set by the ATO.
- The item is bought for business use
- The cost is below the current ATO threshold
- The asset is new or second-hand
- It is installed and ready for use before June 30
Pro Tip: Always keep a copy of the tax invoice. Even if you claim the full amount upfront, the ATO may request proof of purchase during an audit.
- Purchase the asset before the end of the financial year
- Ensure the asset is ready for use on-site
- Keep the tax invoice in your bookkeeping software
- Record the full cost as an asset deduction in your tax return
