Start by tidying your records
The secret to an easy tax return is having clean data throughout the year. Before the clock strikes June 30, ensure your software is fully reconciled and that every bank transaction is categorized correctly.
- Reconcile every bank account up to June 30
- Double-check that all supplier invoices are in your system
- Ensure payroll records match your final STP filings
- Attach digital copies of paper receipts to transactions
Review your asset register
Did you buy a new excavator or a heavy-duty van this year? You might be eligible to claim immediate write-offs, but you need to prove the assets were installed and ready for use before the end of the year.
Important Note: Check your purchase dates carefully. An asset purchased in June but delivered in July falls into the next financial year for tax purposes.
- Superannuation contributions for staff
- Motor vehicle mileage logs
- Inventory stocktake figures
- Private vs business use splits for fuel and phone
