Mastering Trade Business Cash Flow Forecasting

30 October 2026 · 6 min read · By Heaney Accounting

Why Cash Flow Keeps Tradies Awake at Night

Many tradies suffer from the 'feast or famine' cycle where cash is great one month and non-existent the next. Forecasting isn't about guessing; it's about looking at your upcoming jobs and known commitments to see exactly where you stand in four to eight weeks.

  1. List all confirmed job income and expected payment dates.
  2. Identify fixed costs like rent, insurance, and loan repayments.
  3. Estimate variable costs such as materials and subcontractor fees for upcoming projects.
  4. Schedule your BAS and tax payments to avoid unexpected hits.
  5. Subtract total outgoings from expected income to find your net cash position.

Proactive Planning: If your forecast shows a negative balance in three weeks, you can act now by chasing unpaid progress claims or delaying non-essential equipment purchases before the problem becomes a crisis.

By updating this weekly, you stop reacting to bank balance drops and start managing your business from a position of control. This stability allows you to bid for larger contracts with confidence, knowing you have the working capital to support the growth.
