Mastering Subcontractor Payment Compliance for Trades

11 August 2026 · 5 min read · By Heaney Accounting

Understanding Your Obligations

When you hire a subcontractor, you are engaging a separate business entity. Unlike full-time employees, subcontractors manage their own tax and superannuation, but you must ensure they are classified correctly to avoid significant financial risk.

  1. Verify their ABN status via the ABN Lookup tool.
  2. Ensure they hold their own valid insurance policies.
  3. Confirm they are responsible for their own tools and equipment.
  4. Check if they work for multiple clients to prove their independent status.

Warning: If you misclassify an employee as a contractor, you could be liable for unpaid super, payroll tax, and workers compensation premiums, which can devastate your trade business cash flow.

Always request a valid invoice from your subcontractors that includes their ABN and business details. This documentation is essential for your records and is the first thing the ATO will look for during an audit.
