Mastering the Logbook Method for Trade Vehicles

21 August 2026 · 5 min read · By Heaney Accounting

Why the logbook method pays off

If you use your ute or van for both work and personal trips, the logbook method is often the most accurate way to claim vehicle expenses. By proving the actual percentage of work-related use, you can claim a much larger deduction than the simpler cents-per-kilometre method, especially for expensive work vehicles.

  1. Select a 12-week period that is representative of your typical business travel.
  2. Record the odometer reading at the start and end of this period.
  3. For every business trip, note the date, odometer reading at start and finish, and the specific reason for the trip.
  4. Calculate your business use percentage once the 12 weeks conclude.

Pro Tip: Your logbook is valid for five years, provided your work pattern doesn't significantly change. Keep it safe to avoid losing your deduction status.
