Mastering Instant Asset Write-Offs for Your Trade Business

1 November 2026 · 6 min read · By Heaney Accounting

What is the Instant Asset Write-Off?

The instant asset write-off allows your trade business to immediately deduct the full cost of eligible assets from your taxable income in the year you buy them. Instead of claiming a small amount of depreciation every year over the life of the asset, you get the full tax benefit upfront. This is a powerful way to manage cash flow when you need to invest in new tools, work vehicles, or heavy machinery.

Important Note: The rules regarding eligibility thresholds change frequently based on federal government budgets. Always verify the current limit before making a major purchase.

Eligibility Checklist

  • The asset must be used for business purposes.
  • It must be purchased and installed, or ready for use, within the relevant financial year.
  • The purchase price must be below the current government-set threshold.
  • You must have valid tax invoices for all claims.
  1. Consult with your accountant to confirm your business turnover qualifies for the specific scheme.
  2. Purchase the required machinery or equipment before the end of the financial year.
  3. Keep all receipts and proof of 'ready for use' status.
  4. Ensure your bookkeeping software correctly categorizes these as capital assets.
