How to Structure Your Trade Business for Growth

15 August 2026 · 6 min read · By Heaney Accounting

Many tradies start as sole traders because it is cheap and easy. However, as your business picks up more jobs and you hire staff, that simple setup might hold you back. Choosing the right legal structure is one of the most important moves you can make for long-term growth.

Why Structure Matters for Tradies

Your business structure dictates two main things: how much tax you pay and how much personal risk you face if something goes wrong on a site. As a sole trader, you and the business are legally one person, which puts your house and car at risk if you are sued.

  • Asset protection: Keeping your family home safe from business liabilities.
  • Tax rates: Companies pay a flat tax rate, while sole traders pay your personal income tax rate.
  • Professional image: Some big builders and government contracts prefer dealing with companies.
  • Cost of compliance: Companies have more paperwork and setup fees compared to sole traders.
  1. Review your current annual profit and tax position with your bookkeeper.
  2. Assess your level of risk on job sites.
  3. Apply for a new ABN or change your entity details with the ATO.
  4. Update your insurance policies to reflect the new legal entity.
  5. Open a new business bank account in the name of the new entity.

Important Note: Before you rush to incorporate, talk to us. Moving to a company structure requires strict accounting practices, and it doesn't always result in tax savings for every tradie.
