Taking on your first apprentice is a big milestone for any trade business. While it helps you grow your capacity, it also introduces significant financial compliance obligations that need to be set up correctly from day one.
Getting Your Payroll Ready
Before your apprentice starts, ensure you have a registered payroll system that is Single Touch Payroll (STP) compliant. You must classify them correctly as an employee and ensure you have all their tax file declaration forms completed.
- Confirm the apprentice’s relevant Modern Award rate.
- Set up a bank account dedicated to your payroll taxes.
- Ensure your accounting software is linked to the ATO for STP reporting.
- Establish a schedule for quarterly superannuation contributions.
Pro Tip: The Australian Government offers several support programs and wage subsidies for employers who take on apprentices. Check the Apprenticeships Data Management System to see if your business qualifies for financial assistance.
- Weekly or fortnightly wage payments including overtime.
- Required superannuation guarantee payments.
- WorkCover insurance premiums for the apprentice.
- Tax withholding based on the PAYG tax tables.
