Stop Leaving Money on the Table with Regular Rate Reviews
6 November 2026 · By Heaney Accounting
Many trades businesses fall into the trap of setting a labour rate once and never touching it again for years. This is a dangerous habit because your overheads—like fuel, insurance, and software subscriptions—are constantly increasing. By not adjusting your rates, you are essentially giving your clients a discount that your business cannot afford to absorb.
A simple way to check your viability is to look at your total annual business expenses versus your billable hours. If your margin is shrinking, it is likely because your base rate no longer covers the administrative time and equipment wear-and-tear associated with your jobs. You should be factoring in a buffer for the non-billable time you spend quoting, invoicing, and driving between sites.
Communication is the hardest part of raising prices, but most long-term clients will respect a professional explanation. Instead of apologizing for the increase, frame it as a necessary adjustment to keep your service quality and safety standards high. High-value clients understand that they get what they pay for, and they would rather pay a fair rate than deal with a business that is cutting corners due to financial strain.
Make it a habit to schedule a rate review every six months, ideally before your busiest season kicks in. Look at your year-to-date reports to identify which types of jobs are actually costing you more to deliver than they bring in. By trimming the low-margin work and focusing on profitable tasks at a sustainable rate, you will be able to grow your business much faster.
