Strategies for Handling Large Trade Contracts

3 November 2026 · By Heaney Accounting

Taking on larger commercial or residential contracts is a major milestone for any growing trade business. While the project value looks great on paper, it often requires a higher upfront spend on materials and labor before you see a cent of profit. You must ensure your cash flow can bridge the gap between initial expenditure and the first progress payment.

Effective communication with your clients is the most important factor in keeping your profit margins intact during these projects. Ensure your contracts clearly outline the payment schedule and strictly enforce progress claims based on the milestones reached. Do not let payments slip, as a small delay can quickly snowball into a liquidity issue that impacts your ability to pay your own staff.

Reviewing your material procurement strategy is essential when you move into bigger jobs. You might find that buying in bulk for a large project changes your margins, so keep a close eye on your markups and supplier discounts. A small error in estimating material costs can be magnified by the scale of a large build, eating away at your bottom line.

Finally, consider whether you have the administrative capacity to manage the increased paperwork that comes with larger contracts. Tracking variations, health and safety documentation, and compliance reporting takes time away from the tools. It is often better to invest in project management software or outsource your bookkeeping early so you can focus on delivering high-quality work.
