Why Your Business Needs a Dedicated Tax Savings Account

4 October 2026 · By Heaney Accounting

One of the biggest financial mistakes tradies make is keeping their tax savings in the same account as their operating cash. When you see a large balance, it is easy to accidentally spend money that is actually owed to the ATO. This practice creates a false sense of security that disappears the moment your BAS or annual tax bill arrives.

To avoid this, open a separate high-interest savings account specifically for your tax liabilities. Every time a client pays you, calculate the GST portion and set aside a percentage for your income tax. Treat this money as if it does not belong to you because, in reality, it belongs to the government. Moving this cash immediately prevents you from dipping into it for equipment upgrades or other business expenses.

The best approach is to automate these transfers so you never have to think about it. If you invoice your clients regularly, set up a standing rule to sweep a percentage of every incoming payment into the tax account immediately. By the time your quarterly BAS is due, you will have the funds ready and waiting without needing to scramble for cash.

Having this financial buffer does more than just keep you compliant; it reduces the mental load of running your business. Instead of worrying about upcoming tax deadlines, you can focus on winning new jobs and delivering great work for your clients. A disciplined approach to setting aside tax money is the hallmark of a professional trade business that is built to last.
