How to Properly Set Aside Cash for Your Quarterly BAS
27 September 2026 · By Heaney Accounting
Many trades businesses fall into the trap of using their GST collected as operating cash. When the BAS bill arrives every quarter, it can create a massive cash flow crisis if that money has already been spent on materials or wages. The most effective way to avoid this is to treat your GST and PAYG collections as money that does not belong to you.
A simple but powerful strategy is to open a separate high-interest business savings account specifically for tax. Every time you issue an invoice and get paid, immediately transfer the 10% GST portion into this dedicated account. You should also estimate your quarterly PAYG withholding for your employees and set that amount aside at the same time to ensure you are never caught short.
By keeping this tax money in a separate account, you remove the temptation to use it for immediate business expenses. This creates a psychological and physical buffer that keeps your business running smoothly when tax deadlines roll around. You might even earn a small amount of interest on those funds, which is a nice bonus for simply being organized.
Review your account balance once a month to ensure you are on track with your projected tax obligations. If your business is growing and your revenue is increasing, you may need to adjust the percentage you are setting aside. Proactive management of your cash flow will give you the confidence to bid on larger projects without worrying about your upcoming tax commitments.
