How to Prepare Your Trade Business for Tax Season Early
9 September 2026 · By Heaney Accounting
One of the biggest mistakes tradespeople make is leaving all their paperwork for the end of the financial year. When you wait until July to find your invoices and receipts, you miss out on small deductions and create unnecessary stress for yourself and your accountant. Start by dedicating just thirty minutes every Friday afternoon to reconcile your transactions and file your invoices in a digital folder.
Keeping your business and personal expenses strictly separate is non-negotiable for tax compliance. If you use your personal credit card for fuel or parts, it becomes a nightmare to track and often leads to missing out on GST credits. Always pay for business expenses from your dedicated business bank account to keep a clean paper trail that makes tax time much simpler.
Consider reviewing your major tool and equipment assets mid-year to prepare for depreciation claims. If you have purchased heavy machinery or expensive trade gear, make sure you have the tax invoices saved in a secure location immediately after purchase. Having these documents ready to go allows your accountant to accurately calculate your deductions without needing to hunt down missing paperwork at the last minute.
Finally, check your BAS lodgement history to ensure everything is up to date before the EOFY rush. If you have fallen behind on your monthly or quarterly reporting, getting caught up now gives you a clear picture of your actual profit. Having your financial data organised well before June 30th provides you with the peace of mind to focus on winning new jobs instead of worrying about the tax office.
