How to Price Your Jobs for Sustainable Profit
6 September 2026 · By Heaney Accounting
Many tradespeople make the mistake of simply checking what their competitors charge and setting their prices to match. This is a dangerous game because you rarely know the full picture of your competitor's costs, debt levels, or actual margins. Instead, you must start by calculating your specific 'break-even' point, which includes your insurance, software, fuel, and equipment maintenance costs. If your quote only covers the hours worked and the materials used, you are essentially losing money on every job by ignoring your business overheads.
To price for profit, you need to be realistic about how many productive hours you actually have in a week. Most tradies overestimate their billable hours, forgetting that time spent on quotes, driving to suppliers, and administrative bookkeeping is time not spent on revenue-generating work. Divide your total annual operating costs by your actual billable hours to find your true hourly rate. Once you have this number, adding a profit margin becomes a transparent process rather than a guessing game that leaves you stressed at the end of the month.
It is also vital to review your material markups separately from your labour charges. Some materials require significant storage, transport, or risk management, and you should be compensated for that effort. Don't fall into the trap of using a flat percentage across the board for all materials, as this can make you too expensive on small jobs or underprice your value on complex installations. Being granular with your markups ensures that you are properly rewarded for the expertise required to source and install specialized equipment.
Finally, communicate your value clearly to your clients through detailed quotes that highlight the quality of your work. If a client only focuses on the bottom line, they are likely not the right fit for a business trying to scale through high-quality service. By being confident in your pricing, you attract clients who value reliability and workmanship over the cheapest possible price. Review your quotes every quarter against actual job costs to refine your process and keep your profit margins consistent as your business grows.
