Why You Should Categorize Your Clients by Profitability
27 August 2026 · By Heaney Accounting
Most trade business owners fall into the trap of saying yes to every enquiry, assuming that more work equals more profit. However, some jobs consume excessive time, involve constant rework, or come with payment delays that cripple your cash flow. By categorizing your clients, you can identify which projects provide real value and which ones are just keeping you busy while losing money.
Start by reviewing your invoices for the last six months and look at the actual time spent on each site compared to your original estimate. You will likely find that certain types of jobs or specific clients consistently blow out your planned hours. These are the jobs that need to be re-priced or phased out entirely as you look for higher-quality, more profitable contracts.
Once you have identified your 'A-list' clients, prioritize your marketing and scheduling around them. These are the customers who understand the value of your work, pay on time, and often provide word-of-mouth referrals. Investing your energy into these relationships allows you to grow your business without the constant stress of chasing unpaid invoices or dealing with demanding, low-margin jobs.
Finally, don't be afraid to fire your worst clients. It sounds counterintuitive when you are trying to grow, but freeing up your schedule allows you to take on the work that actually helps you reach your financial goals. By focusing on quality over quantity, you create a sustainable trade business that works for you rather than against you.
