Why You Must Lodge Your BAS Early
25 August 2026 · By Heaney Accounting
Lodging your Business Activity Statement (BAS) early is one of the best habits you can form as a trade business owner. When you leave your reporting until the final day, you are more likely to make errors or miss small deductions that add up over the financial year. By preparing your figures in the weeks leading up to the due date, you remove the frantic rush that often leads to avoidable mistakes.
The ATO has become increasingly efficient at identifying discrepancies in reporting. When you lodge early, you have more time to review your numbers and confirm that your GST credits match your receipts. This level of diligence ensures that you are only paying the tax you actually owe, rather than overpaying due to a calculation error made in a late-night rush.
One of the biggest benefits of early lodgement is the peace of mind it provides regarding cash flow. When you know your tax liability ahead of time, you can set that money aside in a separate account so it is ready for the payment date. This prevents the common trap of spending money on materials or overheads that should have been reserved for the tax office.
Finally, early lodgement builds a positive compliance record with the ATO. While it doesn't guarantee you will never be audited, it demonstrates a commitment to good business practices. If you do find yourself with a genuine cash flow issue, having a history of timely lodgement makes it much easier to negotiate a payment plan with the authorities if you ever need one.
