How to Conduct a Quarterly Profitability Health Check
23 August 2026 · By Heaney Accounting
Most tradies fall into the trap of checking their bank balance rather than their actual profit margins. Once a quarter, sit down and look at your total income against your total costs, including materials, fuel, and labour. If your margins have dipped, you need to identify exactly which jobs or materials are eating into your cash.
Check your outstanding invoices during this health check to see if your payment terms are being respected. If you have customers consistently paying late, you might need to adjust your terms to require a deposit upfront. Cash flow is the lifeblood of any trade business, and sitting on unpaid invoices is a fast track to financial stress.
Review your overheads like software subscriptions, insurance premiums, and tool finance repayments to ensure you are still getting value. It is very easy to accumulate 'subscription creep' where you pay for apps or services you no longer use on site. Cutting out just two or three unused subscriptions can instantly improve your bottom line each month.
Finally, set aside a portion of your current profit into a dedicated tax savings account. Many trades businesses struggle at the end of the financial year because they have spent all their profit on new gear without considering their tax liability. By treating your tax set-aside like a non-negotiable business expense, you avoid the panic of a large tax bill when the time comes to pay the ATO.
