Stop Guessing Your Material Markups
12 August 2026 · By Heaney Accounting
Many tradies make the mistake of just passing on the cost of materials without adding a proper markup. While it might feel easier to just charge what you pay, you are failing to account for the time spent sourcing, transporting, and managing those supplies. A standard markup ensures that your business is compensated for the logistics involved in getting parts from the warehouse to the site.
Consider the hidden costs of your materials, such as the fuel used to pick up parts and the office time spent processing invoices. If you are not adding a percentage on top of your base material costs, you are effectively paying the ATO and your suppliers out of your own profit margin. You need to identify a markup percentage that covers these overheads while remaining competitive in your specific trade sector.
Review your recent invoices to see how your current material markups compare to your overall project costs. If your profit remains stagnant despite a high volume of work, your markup strategy is likely the culprit. Adjusting this by even a small percentage can lead to a significant increase in your net profit by the end of the financial year without needing to hire more staff.
Start by auditing your top ten jobs from the last quarter to see where the money leaked. You will likely find that the jobs with the most complex material requirements were the least profitable because of poor markup application. Implementing a consistent, non-negotiable markup policy across all quotes will bring predictability to your bank account and peace of mind to your bookkeeping process.
