Avoiding the Cash Flow Trap in Trade Businesses

2 August 2026 · By Heaney Accounting

One of the biggest risks for trade businesses is the gap between spending money on materials and receiving final payment. When you have high upfront costs for large jobs, you can easily find your bank account running dry before the customer settles the final invoice. It is vital to implement progress payments or deposit schedules to ensure you have cash on hand throughout the duration of the project.

Another major trap is failing to set aside money for tax obligations while waiting for payments to arrive. You must treat your GST and payroll tax liabilities as money that does not belong to your business operations. Moving this money into a separate account immediately upon receiving payments will prevent you from accidentally spending your tax obligations on business overheads or material costs.

You should also review your payment terms regularly to see if they reflect your current business needs. If you are regularly waiting over 30 days for payment, it might be time to introduce early payment discounts or more stringent credit checks for new clients. Tightening your payment terms can drastically improve your available cash for immediate business growth opportunities.

Finally, maintain a simple cash flow forecast that looks at least three months ahead. By documenting expected income and known expenses, you can anticipate lean periods before they happen and adjust your spending accordingly. Planning ahead is the simplest way to move from stressed survival mode to sustainable business growth.
