Why Cash Flow is King for Tradie Growth
24 July 2026 · By Heaney Accounting
Many trade businesses fall into the trap of taking on too much work without having the cash reserves to fund the materials upfront. When you win a big job, you often have to pay for supplies weeks before the client pays your final invoice. Balancing this timing is the biggest hurdle to scaling your business effectively and staying out of debt.
The best way to handle this is to break your projects down into smaller, billable milestones. Instead of waiting until the job is fully completed, ask for a deposit to cover materials and progress payments for completed stages. This keeps your cash flow positive throughout the life of the project and reduces your reliance on overdrafts.
You should also be looking closely at your 'days to pay' metric. If you notice it’s taking clients more than 14 days to clear their invoices, you need to change your payment terms immediately. Switching to electronic payments that allow customers to pay on the spot via credit card can drastically reduce your wait times.
Finally, set aside a specific percentage of every payment you receive into a separate 'tax savings' account. Using this cash to fund your day-to-day operations is a dangerous game that often leads to a massive tax bill you cannot afford. Keep your tax money strictly separate so you can confidently grow your business without looking over your shoulder at the ATO.
