Stay on Top of Your BAS to Avoid ATO Penalties

23 July 2026 · By Heaney Accounting

Running a trade business means you have enough to worry about without the constant looming pressure of BAS deadlines. Many tradies find themselves scrambling at the last minute to find receipts and invoices, which leads to avoidable mistakes and potential penalties. By setting aside a dedicated hour each week to handle your bookkeeping, you can turn a major stressor into a routine, manageable task.

The most common issue we see is failing to separate personal and business expenses. When your business bank account is used for groceries or family fuel, your GST calculations become incredibly difficult to untangle at the end of the quarter. Start by opening a dedicated business account and strictly running all project costs through it to ensure your BAS filings remain clean and audit-ready.

Automation is your best friend when it comes to compliance. Using cloud accounting software allows you to capture photos of receipts on the job site so they are immediately uploaded into your system. This eliminates the 'shoebox of receipts' problem and ensures you aren't missing out on claiming GST credits for supplies and equipment that you purchased months ago.

Finally, remember that the ATO is far more forgiving if you proactively communicate with them before a deadline is missed. If you find yourself unable to pay your BAS on time, contact them or your accountant immediately to request a payment plan. Ignoring the debt only leads to interest charges and credit rating damage that can make running your business much harder in the long run.
